- Using Gizmos with Science and Engineering Practices
Using Gizmos with Science and Engineering Practices
Audience: Grade 3-12 science teachers | Prerequisite: Previous experience using Gizmos in the classroom
About the Workshop
This workshop allows educators to experience each one of the science practices embedded within exemplary Gizmo lessons. Consequently, participants develop a deeper understanding of the Scientific and Engineering Practices and how those practices look in the classroom. They also learn to develop effective lessons around the practices that allow students to develop a deep conceptual understanding of underlying scientific principles.
Participants will:
Understand the Next Generation Science Standards and the implications of using them in the classroom.
Learn best practices for using Gizmos to support the practices where students can design experiments, analyze data and construct scientific explanations about the concepts involved.

Lesson Planning Resources
Density Slice and Dice: Use the handout for student investigations and data collection and the Excel spreadsheet for analysis of the data.
Digestive System CER: Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning handout for use after students have completed their scientific investigations using the Digestive System Gizmo.
Free Fall Laboratory Experiment and Key: Students can record and analyze data to use the data for drawing conclusions.
Lesson Planning Support: Review all of the web pages that were shared during the webinar.
Why Things Fall Snowball: Conduct a pre- and post- assessment using the prompt to initiate prior knowledge and determine if student understanding improved after the lesson.
Everybody's Talking About Gizmos
Hello, Ms. D. I apologize about emailing you during the weekend, but I couldn’t wait to tell you. Gizmos is so much fun, and I absolutely love it. I actually learn something and I like the fact that it is interactive. Thank you so much for making us do Gizmos.
- Gizmos Student, American International School, Abu DhabiI really love Gizmos as they help students grasp difficult concepts that can’t always be seen. They make abstract ideas come to life.
- Gizmos Teacher, Foothills School Division, Alberta, CanadaI see more student engagement with lesson content when students are using Gizmos. Student grades have shown more understanding of the topics.
- Gizmos Teacher, Salinas Unified School District, CATeachers deserve a tool like Gizmos to empower students to conduct their own investigations, learn without reading lots of text but by doing lots of reasoning.
- Gizmos Teacher, Los Angeles Unified School District, CAAnother great feature of Gizmos is that I can manipulate them to accomplish my desired learning outcomes for my students. Sometimes I take a Gizmo that is meant to be an entire lab, and I cut it down into a smaller, briefer activity. But, other times, I combine some of the smaller labs into one and have the students access the various Gizmos from the class home page for a bigger assignment. In that way, Gizmos are always able to accomplish my desired outcomes.
